چکیده

Subfossil biotic assemblages in surface sediments of lakes have been used to infer ecological conditions across environmental gradients.. Local variables are usually the major drives of assemblage composition, but in remote oceanic islands biogeographic filters may play a significant role. To assess the contribution of local and regional filters in the composition of subfossil diatoms and chironomid assemblages in surface sediments forty-one lakes in Azores archipelago ()were studied and related to environmental variables. Ordination techniques were used to identify the drivers that best explain the composition of these assemblages. Both assemblages are influenced by multiple limnological variables (conductivity, pH, nutrients). However, diatom assemblages differed mainly in the proportion of planktonic versus benthic species along the lakes’ depth gradient while Chironomids differed significantly between islands but not between lake depths.. Thus, biogeographic filters play an important role in shaping islands freshwater communities, particularly insect ones, more influenced by geographic variables. Results demonstrate the accuracy and potential of biotic remains in sediments for applied studies of lake ecology, trophic status, climatic trends and ecological reconstruction and evolution of lakes. In the Azores, the application of this information in the development of inference models, is envisaged as further step to accomplish these goals. 1 2

Chironomidae (Diptera: Insecta) in oceanic islands: New records for the Azores and biogeographic notes

Oceanic islands freshwater systems are unique due to their volcanic origin, oceanic situation, catchment morphology and the presence of distinct freshwater communities when compared with continental systems. This study provides an update of Azorean chironomid fauna records, distribution data and includes biogeographical comments, based on collections covering a range of freshwater habitats on s...

Ecological Health Assessment of the Surface Sediments of the Coral Reefs of Khark and Kharko Islands (Persian Gulf, Iran)

To assess the ecological risk of the coral reef habitats of Khark and Kharko islands in the Persian Gulf, (Bushehr province), the surface sediment samples were collected from seven stations, in September 2019. The islands have a great ecological value due to the presence of coral reefs. The amounts of potentially toxic elements, sediment texture, total organic matter, total phosphorus and total...

Tropical Ochrophyte Algae from the Eocene of Northern Canada: a Biogeographic Response to past Global Warming

We report on exquisitely preserved specimens of freshwater siliceous algae belonging to the classes Synurophyceae (scaled chrysophytes) and Bacillariophyceae (diatoms) from middle Eocene lake sediments in Northern Canada. When considered in the context of closest extant relatives, these microfossils present unequivocal biogeographic and ecological affinities with warm-water ochrophyte assemblag...

Biogeographic, climatic and spatial drivers differentially affect a-, b- and g-diversities on oceanic archipelagos

Island biogeographic studies traditionally treat single islands as units of analysis. This ignores the fact that most islands are spatially nested within archipelagos. Here, we took a fundamentally different approach and focused on entire archipelagos using species richness of vascular plants on 23 archipelagos worldwide and their 174 constituent islands. We assessed differential effects of bio...
